As mysterious as its beautiful, as forbidding as it is populated with warm-hearted people, Syberia is a land few Westerners know, and even fewer will ever visit. Traveling alone, by train, boat, car, and on foot, Colin Thubron traversed this vast territory, talking to everyone he encountered about the state of the beauty, whose natural resources have been savagely exploited for decades; a terrain tainted by nuclear waste but filled with citizens who both welcomed him and fed him—despite their own tragic poverty. From Mongoloia to the Artic Circle, from Rasputin's village in the west through tundra, taiga, mountains, lakes, rivers, and finally to a derelict Jewish community in the country's far eastern reaches, Colin Thubron penetrates a little-understood part of the world in a way that no writer ever has.

In Siberia was my first exposure to Colin Thurbon and I must say that I found the book quite compelling --it was a wonderful and involving "long flight read" (a very important criterion for me in my life). I haev read quite a bit of and about the Gulag --and the camps --primarily Solzeneichtin (not sure of the spelling) and have been greatly fascinated by the incredible destruction and persecution imposed on the Russian people by Stalin and his cruel despotic regime but this book brought the cold and hopelessness of this vast region a lot closer to me. I look forward to reading other books by Thurbon and have also ordered Valentin Rasputin's book about Siberia as an attempt to grasp more of this subject. I do, however, agree with some of the other customer revierwers that Thurbon could have given more of himself by letting us know more about how he went about planning this trip, who helped him along the way, etc. Now maybe that would ahve taken away from the narrative flow --or maybe that's another book in itself but I felt he was a bit too matter of fact on how he got from one place to another, But saying all that, I enjoyed the book very much and look forward to reading his other travel essays that are still in print.
written for everyone who wants to go to siberia, but never will.
This is a very academic travel book. There are different levels upon which to appreciate Thubron's work. I loved learning about different people he encountered as he was traveling and , since I had very little knowledge of Siberia, I was able to learn a little about what is where.
I found this book difficult to read. I am not sure why unless it is the authors style and his use of the English language.
Beautiful, poetic writing along with interesting anecdotes on a more realistic level. good sense of humour. I would recommend it toanyone interested in Russian history, especially post Soviet era and people planning to travel to Siberia.
This is a facinating book about the tragedy of Siberia during the Yeltsin years and centuries before. It's a story of death and survival in an unimaginably huge land sometimes beautiful, sometimes ugly, and most frequently monotinous. A story of ethnic native Siberians whose cultures were destroyed by Communism, of 60,000,000 prisoners who died in Stalin's gulag, of ordinary Russian immigrants who lost their livelyhood because of the collapse of the economy after the fall of the Soviet Union and more. I only have one criticism. There is no bibliography when its quite obvious that Thubron did a lot of research before he went on this journey: historical, geological, ethnological.
No problems. Great Service.
excellent book. Gives you a feel for the "lost people" of the new Russian and their unfortunate plight today. Marilyn Ross
